Historical Captain John Harper House, the Crown Jewel of Downtown Wilmington Maintains Its Throne After Dark with Custom Outdoor Lighting

After years of renovation and revitalization, the Captain John Harper house was ready for the finishing touches this summer. A landmark in Wilmington’s famous historic district, the homeowner called us at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Wilmington to add landscape lighting to the stunning grounds so that this historical gem could be seen at night as well as during the day. By coordinating carefully with the Historic Wilmington Foundation, we were able to light up the home to match historical, aesthetic needs while maintaining gorgeous looking LED efficiency.

During the day you may not even notice the high-quality oxidized copper lights tucked in among the lush landscaping, but at night you are certainly going to notice the effects. Starting from the street, you will first notice the lamp post holding the Historical Foundation sign. Beyond that, the two crepe myrtles that frame the stairs leading up to the home provided the perfect focal element for creating a beacon welcoming visitors to enter the gated property.

To meet the guidelines as set forth by the historical foundation, we could not illuminate the columns on the Queen Anne porch. To accomplish our outdoor lighting design goals we used gorgeous landscape lighting to highlight the porch by illuminating the landscape beds in front.

As well as the narrow pathways that lead around the side, connecting the front yard to the courtyard and driveway around back.

When you arrive in the back courtyard, you’ll be pleased to enjoy a gorgeously illuminated statue that is the center point of the cobblestone patio.

Around back, on the South 2nd street side of the home, you will find a driveway leading up to the garage. To make this area more functional at night, we added oxidized copper lights along the top of the concrete retaining wall. The driveway now becomes completely visible at night for easy arrivals and departures.

To complete the project we used more LED path lighting to lead from the driveway to the courtyard and back door of the home.

With the use of 46 LED path lights and focal lights, along with two lamp posts, we were able to create an attraction that is as alluring at night as it is during the day. Not only are the paths and driveway illuminated, but the gardens and courtyard gain nighttime function as well. We urge you to take a stroll along 311 S. Front Street at sunset to see the magnificent transformation from day to night as the pictures do not do the Captain John Harper House justice.
